What is Deep Tissue and Sports Massage?
Deep tissue and sports massage is a form of massage therapy that works into the sub-layers and fascia (connective tissue surrounding muscles). It works into the deeper layers of the tissue realigning muscles. It is of great use for chronic aches and pains that might come from previous injury or poor posture such as sitting at a desk.
How Does It Work?
Over time adhesions can form as a result of chronic muscle tension or injury in tendons, ligaments and muscles. This adhesion can cause several problems such as disrupted circulation, reduced range of motion, inflammation and pain.
Deep Tissue Massage works by breaking down these adhesions in order to restore normal range of motion and reduce pain. This is done by applying firm, concentrated pressure in order to reach the deeper tissue. For this to work best muscles should be as relaxed as possible in order for the deeper musculature to be reached.
Does Deep Tissue Massage Hurt?
Most people will find there is some discomfort during the session. This will be discussed throughout the session in order to not exceed what is within your comfort range and isolate effected areas.
There can be muscle soreness the following day to a sports massage, similar to that following rigorous exercise. Advice for this will be given through the session along with any recommended stretches or movements for rehabilitation.
